Pork Farm Petition of 1850

Petition by Tan Kim Seng and fourteen other Chinese merchants, including Seah Eu Chin, for the reinstatement of a tax on pork, the so-called “Pork Farm”. Original in the Straits Settlements Records.

   新嘉坡衆唐民等謹禀上於

大王尊前 民等素居宇下深沭治化之恩感銘於懐曷其
   有極兹幸

大王駕臨斯土因思德政所施回當遍及貧困而痛脚殘
   疾之人未得?養之費是以民等具有一呈欲求

大王准行宰猪傌仔之事以爲痛脚殘疾人之飬未敢擅
   進謹此預禀倘蒙許允賜示方敢進
